Flagship Follies

Ah, Cryptic.  You’re quickly coming to give me more material than even SOE.

The two year anniversary for Star Trek Online is approaching, with their festivities kicking off tomorrow.  One of the big deals is the release of the new flagships of Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Forces.  The Starfleet one is of particular interest since this is the class represented by the new USS Enterprise-F.  The thing is, though, that nobody’s quite sure what we’re gonna get.

In a pair of devblog posts, the Executive Producer, Stephen D’Angelo, put up the following stats for the Odyssey and the Bortas flagships:

Odyssey:

Requires: Vice Admiral rank (level 50)

Weapons: 4 Fore, 4 Aft
Device Slots: 4
Console Upgrades: 2 Tactical, 4 Engineering, 3 Science

Bridge Officer Stations: 1 Lieutenant Tactical, 1 Commander Engineering, 1 Lieutenant Science, 1 Ensign Universal, 1 Lieutenant Commander Universal

Hull Strength: 42,000
Maximum Warp: 9.996
Turn Rate: 6
Impulse Modifier: 0.15
Shield Modifier: 1.15

+10 Power to Shields, +10 Power to Auxiliary

Bortas:

Requires: Lt. General rank (level 50)

Weapons: 4 Fore, 4 Aft
Device Slots: 4
Console Upgrades: 4 Tactical, 4 Engineering, 1 Science

Bridge Officer Stations: 1 Lieutenant Tactical, 1 Commander Engineering, 1 Lieutenant Science, 1 Ensign Universal, 1 Lieutenant Commander Universal

Hull Strength: 43,500
Maximum Warp: 9.96
Turn Rate: 5.5
Impulse Modifier: 0.15
Shield Modifier: 1.0

+15 Power to Weapons, +5 Power to Engines
Standard Cloaking Device
Can Equip Cannons

Well and good, right?  Comparing with existing top ships, they’re big, they’re sluggish, but there was a lot of enthusiasm for the two universal consoles, allowing any bridge officer to man them.  So:  most of the comments on the forums tended to remark on those two things-sluggish bad, universal consoles good.

Until the “good” dev CaptainGeko (who, as readers may remember, already has a level of infamy with the whole tier-3 Nebula/Excelsior mess), put up a post indicating that they were going to tweak the stats.

I think the current version of the Odyssey and Bortas on Tribble may have reduced HP and turn rate. I can’t remember what went live, so I am just summarizing below to be safe.

We have spent a lot of time thinking about what the final stats will be. The turn rate was a big issue. We honestly wanted to make it slower so they don’t compete with existing ships. Instead, we decided to change the Boff seating a little

Here are some change coming:

Odyssesy:
HP: 42000
Turn: 5.5
BOff: Changed Ensign_Universal to an Ensign_Science
Now comes with Advanced Slipstream Drive (can stay active twice as long before shutting down, but has same recharge time and other stats like standard slipstream)

Bortas:
HP: 43500
Turn: 5
BOff: Changed Ensign_Universal to an Ensign_Engineering

Everything else should remain the same.

We also are changing Engineering Shield HP and Shield Regen consoles to be Science consoles, and increasing the effectiveness of all science consoles by about 50%.

You can bet Kirk and Picard wouldn’t take this lying down.

That’s right:  they ditched a universal console and made the ships MORE sluggish.  A sop was thrown in for a quantum slipstream console that will supposedly double the duration of the ability in sector space, but that didn’t exactly get met with enthusiasm.

The “good” CaptainGeko did throw up a set of “final” stats for the ships in a later post.

Here are the complete final Stats for the Flagships:

Odyssey:

Requires: Vice Admiral rank (level 50)

Weapons: 4 Fore, 4 Aft
Device Slots: 4
Console Upgrades: 2 Tactical, 4 Engineering, 3 Science

Bridge Officer Stations: 1 Lieutenant Tactical, 1 Commander Engineering, 1 Lieutenant Science, 1 Ensign Science, 1 Lieutenant Commander Universal

Hull Strength: 42,000
Maximum Warp: 9.996
Turn Rate: 6
Impulse Modifier: 0.15
Shield Modifier: 1.15

+10 Power to Shields, +10 Power to Auxiliary
Advanced Quantum Slipstream Drive (doubles standard Slipstream Drive time)

Bortas:

Requires: Lt. General rank (level 50)

Weapons: 4 Fore, 4 Aft
Device Slots: 4
Console Upgrades: 4 Tactical, 4 Engineering, 1 Science

Bridge Officer Stations: 1 Lieutenant Tactical, 1 Commander Engineering, 1 Lieutenant Science, 1 Ensign Engineering, 1 Lieutenant Commander Universal

Hull Strength: 43,500
Maximum Warp: 9.96
Turn Rate: 5.5
Impulse Modifier: 0.15
Shield Modifier: 1.0

+15 Power to Weapons
Standard Cloaking Device (at 80% cloaking effectiveness)
Can Equip Cannons

Whaddya mean I can’t cloak as good as a Bird of Prey?!

So it looks as if the turn rates were restored to original specifications, but the bridge officer slots still locked.  The Klingons get a hit on their cloaking device, too, although I’d have to leave it to them to determine how big a deal that is (I haven’t really used the cloaks, and I don’t really PvP, so I’m not an expert on the subject).  At this point, though, I’m not sure I’d believe Geko if he told me the sun would rise in the East until I saw the proof.  His credibility in my opinion is nonexistent.  I won’t be surprised if what we get tomorrow turns out to be different than everything listed above.

The final touch?  These are limited time collections.  You can get these ships for free by doing a mission at the shipyards; then they’ll be unavailable again (at least until some other event rolls around that prompts it).  However, it is known that both ships will be having superior versions in the C-Store at some future point.  I’m betting on good odds that the universal slots will make their return…if you’re willing to shell out real money for them.  Just wait and see.

  1. I just got mine. It is indeed a pretty poor ship if you want to maneuverability (ie. turn rate, speed etc.), but it does make up for it with it’s large firing arcs.

In my eyes, the Odyssey is a cruiser as per the developers want it. From most of what I know from these cruisers is they don’t necessarily have both firepower and maneuverability, but they do have the best of both world. Downside is that it won’t be as great as specializing into another ship. Which make this a pretty versatile class if you can properly use it. Good for playing defense and offense, if you’re a team player then likely a good candidate as a command ship to coordinate from.

Not too sure about the Borta. From what I’ve seen, slow as well but with energy weapons; it’s one massive laser/cannon platform.

    • I haven’t had much time to test drive either one of the two, although I did manage to do the missions yesterday. Adapting to the slow maneuvering wasn’t too horrible-I’d done the Galaxy class thing, which isn’t exactly grace in space. I’ve been spending most of my time with an assault cruiser, though, so it’s been causing me to rethink my boff abilities and loadout.

Both ships seem like they’re designed as beam boats; I’d be tempted to think a single torpedo for the front arcs, and maybe cloaked mines for the back. Since my habits tend to be PvE more than PvP, I’m not too concerned about ultra-tuning; just want to be able to see how well things work. It’s going to be an interesting week or so trying different configurations for these ships.
